It’s the little things

I missed the sourdough craze that broke out during the covid lockdown, but a couple years later my husband and two sons went on a two-week high-adventure trip with their BSA troop to Philmont Scout Ranch over the summer. Looking for something to do at home with my daughter to pass the time, I painstakingly created a sourdough starter that got a lot of use for several years.

This winter we moved, and the starter was pushed into the back of the fridge and forgotten. But a few weeks ago I was inspired to start making bread again when my college son’s friend brought over a loaf of rosemary sour dough, sliced it up, slathered the slices in olive oil, salt and paper, and broiled them for 10 minutes. I could have eaten the whole loaf.

Then I spotted this Weck tulip jar. I know I’m late to the game on the tulip jar popularity, but better late than never. The shape is just so pretty, and the size is perfect for sourdough starter (it’s just shy of 4 x 6 inches). I spent a few days reviving the starter—adding bread flour and water, and keeping it loosely covered and at room temp. Now it’s happily bubbling up and ready to make some bread. And this pretty little jar just makes me happy sitting on the kitchen counter. It’s the little things, y’all.
